Basement Remodeling Considerations

Basement remodeling considerations

If you're wanting to make better use of your home's basement, remodeling is a great way to use that extra space. Yet, getting the most out of the remodeling takes some forethought and planning if you want to be sure your basement remodeling works out for you no matter how time changes things for you and your family.

Your home's basement is different from everyone else's, so what has to be done to remodel your basement will differ from your neighbor's. This should always be at the forefront of your understanding. You may need waterproofing, flooring, drywall, and more, while others would only need drywall and additional electrical. You may have ducting in place for your air climate control in the basement, or you may need additional equipment to heat and cool the area. What is necessary to prepare your basement for use may make a big difference in what you want to do with the space.

Some of your other considerations for remodeling your basement will be…

  • Waterproofing
  • Sealing
  • Electrical
  • Lighting
  • Heating & Air Conditioning
  • Plumbing
  • Floor Plan or Layout Changes

Based on what you want to use the basement space for, the floor plan or layout of the area should be a primary concern. Whether or not you will need adjustments made to the plumbing, electrical, or heating & air will all be based on what you plan to use your basement for and what exists there now.

For instance, if you're only planning to finish out your basement so you can use it to store food or have a place to go during a winter storm, you'll not need to worry so much about the final finishing touches of adding flooring, furnishings, and extra lighting. You may be more concerned with waterproofing, storage shelving, having a bathroom installed, and outfitting the basement with heating and air.

Yet, if you plan to use your basement as an entertainment room, you may even want to add some additional electrical and plumbing to outfit a galley kitchen area. This is where the design phase of your basement remodeling comes into play. You'll want to know what you will be designing the basement for.

Making your basement area into a new family theater room may require many prior steps to get to that finished project. Typically, a basement area will require waterproofing and sealing, some type of heating and air conditioning (whether as part of the home's central system or not), flooring, drywall, insulation, and additional lighting and electrical systems.

The best type of basement remodeling plan will allow you to utilize the space for any number of circumstances. Over time, your family dynamics change as children grow and your space needs change as well. For instance, you may start out with basement remodeling in order for grandma to have a place to stay yet during times when she isn't there the space can be used as a family entertainment area or a storage and storm shelter space.

  • Guest room area
  • Family entertainment
  • Storm Sheltering
  • Storage
  • Deluxe Master Suite

With basement remodeling, your options are wide open. Figuring out how and when you plan to use the extra space is going to be your first step, even prior to working out the design plans. Let your imagination go and remember that planning for its general use will allow for more options on down the line.
